It's only taken me six years to start my blog....Since Meg was first diagnosed I wanted to write, but as those of you with children with 'high maintenance medical needs' will know - there are some days that pass without acknowledgment, and so I make no apologies for my delay. If you join me on my journey, I hope you do so with an open mind, a large glass of comfort, and the obligatory sense of humour. Let us begin.
I remember the Dr's look he gave me when I took Meg who was then 9, to the surgery (yet again) with my concerns. This time, it was with quiet determination that I would at least be referred to 'someone who actually knew what they were talking about'.
"...our main concern is her height, or rather lack of it. Her sister is 4 and only a head smaller than her."
"Well, to passify your concern, I'll refer you to an endocrinologist - the appointment will be sent out in the post". End of appointment, conversation and actually now I come to think about it, the end of my relationship with this particular doctor.
And so we waited, when the appointment finally came (a month later), it was slap bang in the middle of 'holidays' and so she wouldn't get seen for another four months!! Not being of a medical mind, and now armed with the Consultants name, I decided to look up on the internet what the consultant was and what tests they would run.....
Endocrinologist - The branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the endocrine system.
I couldn't even pronounce it, never mind understand it. Whist frightening myself to death by reading all about various conditions that can be affected by the endocrine system, it was when I clicked onto Turner Syndrome that my heart stopped, and I knew I had reached my first destination.
